Erasmus+: the University of Bologna Ranks First in Italy

The report by the National Erasmus+ Agency INDIRE ranks Alma Mater as the top university in Italy in terms of the number of students participating in exchange programs, both outgoing and incoming.

The University of Bologna ranks first among Italian universities offering exchange programs to students for educational experiences abroad. This is confirmed by the results of the first assessment of the Erasmus+ Program (report in Italian), carried out by the National Erasmus+ Agency INDIRE. The report’s data indicate that Alma Mater ranks first not only in terms of the number of outgoing students, but also in terms of incoming students.

According to Alma Mater data updated to 2015, 2,458 students from the University of Bologna went abroad for exchange periods, while 2,468 students from more than 130 countries came to study at the university.

The INDIRE report shows a growing desire among students, teachers, and trainees to pursue educational experiences abroad: periods of study and work that today constitute an important calling card for a better future in the job market. In particular, mobility grants have enabled almost 58,000 Italians to travel abroad (650,000 in Europe), with a financial commitment of €92.80 million. In this area, Italy is second only to Turkey in terms of the number of applications submitted.

After the University of Bologna, the Italian universities with the highest number of outgoing students are: the University of Padua, La Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Turin, and the University of Milan. As for students coming from abroad to do their Erasmus+ in Italy, the universities that welcome the most, after the Alma Mater, are: La Sapienza University of Rome, the Polytechnic of Milan, the University of Padua and the University of Florence.
